Black Diamond Jinn by Mary Hughes

Have sex, avert doom, save the world.

The Mayan Doom is real. Government witch Amaia Jones has the spreadsheet to prove it. Amaia is a desk-bound research wizard, living uncomfortably in the shadow of her famous Venus-magic parents. Then she discovers the world is ending. Tonight. But her bulldog of a boss not only refuses to believe her, he won’t give her the secret to calling the one force powerful enough to help-the jinn. Amaia turns to her mental guardian angel, Rafe, the darkly handsome presence who has comforted her since her parents died. Rafe has a secret of his own. He’s a black diamond jinn, one of the deadliest and most powerful of his kind. He’s detected an enemy ruthlessly using blood sacrifice to stoke Y12 public panic. Rafe needs to get into the human realm to stop the Doom, but he can’t unless Amaia calls him, and she is threatened by his scorching sensuality.
Amaia’s guardian angel is a stunning jinni and suddenly her job is far more complicated. Jinn take their pound of flesh in exchange for magical help, but the only flesh Rafe wants is hers, taut with delight. Sounds great, except Venus magic is what drove a wedge between her parents. But her alternatives are rapidly dwindling, and with four hours to go on humanity’s darkest night, the only alternative to surrendering her flesh may be surrendering her life.

My review (18 and up):

This book has very steamy scenes and may not be for every one. That being said…………..

I am a firm believer in Karma and I was immediately drawn to this book, not by the awesome cover **drool**, but by the karmic spreadsheets Amaia was pouring over in the first few pages of the book.  Black Diamond Jinn is filled with witches, evil apprentices, a HOT jinn, Venus sex and oh yeah….impending doom.  Back to the spreadsheets….Amaia discovers after pouring over her karmic spreadsheets that the Mayan’s prediction of the end of the world, Y12 (December 21st, 2012) is in fact real. The effort of the witches to create positive Karma to avert the disaster is not working and Maya discovers that some one is actually manipulating the positive flow to essentially force the disaster to happen. It gets even worse when Amaia finds out that actual witches are killing other witches to acquire their power in order to raise the nightmare gods. If that happens humans just wouldn’t wake up. Ever. Enter Amaia’s internal voice (or so she thought) Rafe. Rafe is a Black Diamond Jinn who is not an ordinary Jinn, he doesn’t like to take the typical pound of flesh that jinns usually do, he has been watching Amaia since she was born and has fallen in love with her.  After revealing himself to Amaia and Amaia hitting roadblock after roadblock making people believe Y12 is real, Rafe convinces Amaia that only Venus magic can stop Y12. Venus magic is the strongest type of energy and it’s produced by sex and the energy it produces.

I really enjoyed these characters and Mary Hughes writing style.  It’s not just about sex, it about fulfilling your destiny, over coming your past and the dialogue is really funny and well written.  Black Diamond Jinn is a fast paced, extremely entertaining, steamy ride. No pun intended.
