Glistening Swarm, for me, was the perfect conclusion to the Glistening Haven series. Not only did it dive further into the characters we’ve become attached to over the last two books but we also get a look at some new characters that steal your heart in the process but the characters aren’t the only thing that have matured and developed deeper by Glistening Swarm. Jill Cooper’s writing seems effortless and improved since the first book in this series as she paints the picture of the true look of her dragon-like apocalypse.
Glistening Haven showed a more serene scene of the prisoner-esk dome that kept these creatures we didn’t know about hidden and kept what was left of the world safe. They were stuck in a mild manner, 1950 lifestyle, where they were happy and subdued by force and conditioning from the people keeping them in the dome. Glistening Rebellion showed us what happens when those creatures start having a voice and thinking for themselves and we got to see a small glimpse of what the world outside the protective domes were like. We see Jenna struggling with who she is and who she wants to be while still trying to do what she knows is right no matter what the cost. Glistening Swarm showed a darker side of the apocalypse that Jill Cooper created. There’s a struggle of power between what’s left of the human race whose desperately and unethically trying to find a cure for the Glistening disease, the Glistening who want to rule over and show their extreme power to an in-superior race and then there is the small resistance group just trying to bring Glistening and human together.
Like the first two books in the Glistening series Cooper often switches the point of view with most chapters of Glistening Swarm. When I started Glistening Haven I had a slightly harder time not only keeping track of the character shifts in each chapter but also all the different characters that kept developing. However, I enjoyed the different point of views and new characters in Glistening Swarm and often found myself getting sucked into a particular character only to be torn away and thrown into a different characters point of view and then the cycle would start over again.
We saw the return of a few characters we haven’t seen since Glistening Haven answering the question what happened to that character but overall things happened to people in an unexpected way which left me wondering who was really safe in the story. I felt like a story as a whole, Glistening Swarm had me continuously wondering what would happen next and what would happen to the people I had become so fond of. Glistening Swarm was more developed in writing, characters and their actions showing not only a darker world but also a darker side to the characters as they tried to survive and right some wrongs in this amazingly written and hard to put down story.
