Why Complicated Creatures Part One Is Set Primarily in Chicago
I was lucky enough to live in Chicago on-and-off a few years while I was breaking my teeth in corporate and outside of the nine months of winter, I absolutely LOVED that city. It’s got all the amenities of a major city with a small-town friendliness! It’s also incredibly easy to get almost anywhere in the world from O’Hare when the jets are running on time, which the traveler in my really loves.
I used to live right off of Michigan Avenue and walk through Grant Park nearly every day, particularly in the summer. Summertimes in Chicago are unparalleled for me. I thoroughly enjoyed all the music festivals, outdoor art exhibits, and food trucks that city had to offer, in addition to fine cuisine (God Bless Charlie Trotter’s soul, RIP) and of course, the bar scene.
At the time I lived there, The Blackstone was being renovated and I used to think…”Man, I wonder what it must be like to live in a building like that?” When the hotel finally opened, I treated myself, my mother and my aunt to a weekend there, so when you read scenes about “The Whitney”, you can better imagine which building I had in mind.
If you’re from Chicago or an avid fan, there’ll be plenty of places and venues in this book you’ll recognize. And if you’ve never been– I highly recommend a visit, particularly in early summer or early fall. It’s just a gorgeous city with so many amazing things to offer.
I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about this book but I totally got into it by the 4th chapter. Military erotica/romance seems to be my new thing lol.
I live about 45 minutes away from Chicago and since this book is based a lot in Chicago it was sort of magical to me. I could envision where the characters were and it brought a whole new dimension to the book. Sam and Jack were electric and their chemistry leaps off the page. I LOVE the dynamic between Jack and his brother Jaime plus his niece will give anyone a run for their money. It wasn’t just a straightforward romance. It was a terrific story with outstanding characters that gelled completely. 5 stars from me.
Alexi LAWLESS has been a closeted writer for thirty-odd years—from way back when she was banging out stories on a Commodore 64 to her years writing the corporate strategies for some of the largest companies in the world. But it was two years ago, laid up after foot surgery, that she started to seriously consider whether it was time to come out as the novelist she’d always wanted to be.
Armed with a laptop and an around-the-world ticket, she quit the corporate scene and set out to see if her passion for writing was more than a pipe-dream. Less than a year later, Alexi’s debuting her first published novel, Complicated Creatures: Part One, with the second book due out this summer. And while you may catch her sipping a drink in Miami Beach, you’re more likely to find her indulging her nomadic tendencies somewhere in Latin America or Southeast Asia.
