Devin Owen has come back from the Dragon Wars a changed Werewolf. For one thing, he’s lost his wolf side as well as most of his desire to live. He spends most of his life doped up to handle the pain from his injured leg.

Lena Knox knew the moment she met Devin that he was her mate. But, she’d been a child at the time and he hadn’t noticed her at all. Now, all grown up she wants Devin to be the wolf she’s waited for. Not that she has a lot of time for longing with life crumbling around her.

A couple of heated encounters draw them together but is it enough to overcome the war wounds they both carry? Or will an outside enemy destroy them before they get the chance to know?

The Dragon alarm sounded in the distance. Devin’s whole body tensed. He knew they were false alarms, but they still got him worked up. On the front lines, when that alarm sounded, there was nothing fake about it.

“How long does it usually go on?” He’d been more than just a little distracted the first time he’d heard the shrill, piercing sound. Keeping Lena safe had been the pivotal thought in his mind.

“Maybe a minute.” His father stood up. “I wish they’d stop sounding them. Everyone knows the Dragons never get in this far.”

“Going running tonight?” Devin could hardly think with the Dragon alarm ringing. He wanted to be distracted; he needed his father to speak.

“It’s going on a bit long now.” His dad walked over to the window that faced the street. Devin joined him to peer outside.

A sight tremor overtook his hand, and he put it in his pocket so his dad wouldn’t notice. Why was he so worked up? His nose twitched and he bounced from foot to foot. Where had all of this energy come from?

He swung open the door and walked outside where the alarm sounded louder.

A noise caught his attention over the ringing hell assaulting his ears. He turned in the direction to see Lena tromping down the street. She looked worn out and for a second he wanted to wrap her up in his arms. The woman worked constantly. His heart melted at the sight of her seconds before he remembered his anger.

My Review:

This was a really short book but it packed a complete punch. I was in awe at how quickly and thoroughly the author gave us a complete sense of the characters. Devin is a sexy, broken werewolf in a world where humans have been all but extinct for over 100 years. Dragons have tried to take over the earth and basically rid it of all other species. What men are left go into the military to fight in the Dragon Wars. Most don’t come back and if they do they are either addicted to drugs due to PTSD or severly wounded. Devin is so shook up by the war her can’t change into his wolf form. Bored and lonely he starts paying attention to the girl across the street, Lena, who secretly has had a crush on Devin since she was little. Their path to love was terrifying, awesome and super sweet. I totally loved this book. I was sad when it was over. I hope that Rebecca will take pity on me and write them into more stories. 🙂

As a teenager, Rebecca Royce would hide in her room to read her favorite romance novels when she was supposed to be doing her homework. She hopes, these days, that her parents think it was well worth it.
