Mirror Image Excerpt:

Slowly driving up to the house I once grew up in, exhaustion finally is settling deep into my muscles. I should have stopped for more than a cup of coffee and something to eat. But I’m too damn anxious—I want to get this meeting with my mother over with. Jesus, I wish Michael was here with me, but that is asking for too much.

I pull up and park next to the ranch style home I barely recognize. I can’t believe I used to see this house as a safe haven. Where my father and mother once loved each other. A home where I never had to worry if someone would ever harm me. Now, a man who had done just that mars all the memories I have of this place.

Trees surrounding the property canopy the house with shade. Only a few rays of light filter through the branches, lighting up the dense foliage now choked with weeds, where lush green grass once took root.

The house isn’t any better. The roof is warped, with tons of singles missing. Some of the cedar siding is rotting out, leaving behind holes, exposing decay and insulation. The once blue awning has turned grey and weathered and the driveway that leads to a detached two-car garage has seen better days. Three rusted out, flat tired vehicles sit near the dilapidated building giving the once pristine property a look of a junkyard.

Even the garden my mother had kept so immaculate has erupted with blooms of dandelions and thistles as tall as my hip.

Aside from the original mailbox my father had constructed for my mother, I don’t recognize the house anymore. My eyes are watering but I refuse to cry over what is gone now. My family.
